Women are hardly ever highlighted in the press when they become entrepreneurs for their own businesses, even the brilliant ones and even the most popular ones. Nowadays, women are establishing their business as household names in a wide variety of industries such as publishing, technology, fashion, beauty, broadcasting. There are many amazing stories about successful women, and we compiled a short list to emphasise them.
1. Cindy Mi
Company: VIPKID
Cindy Mi had founded VIPKID as a platform that connects Chinese students with English tutors from North America and Canada. The company is currently valued more than US$1billion.
2. Sophia Amoruso
Company: Nasty Gal and Girlboss media
Sophia Amoruso founded Nasty Gal and even though she stepped down as the CEO when the company filed for bankruptcy, her entrepreneurial spirit helped her move on and develop a new venture, Girlboss.
3. Tina Sharkey
Company: Brandless
Tina Sharkey founded Brandless with a clear goal in mind: to make high quality products at simple and fair prices. The company manufactures beauty and personal care products and even food and sells it without the so-called “brand tax”.
4. Huda Kattan
Company: Huda Beauty
Huda Kattan started making her own eyelashes because it was hard to find some of a great quality. She quickly raised into popularity as a freelance makeup artist and her beauty brand has expanded from makeup to skincare products.
5. Vera Wang
Company: Vera Wang
After designing her own wedding dress at the age of 40, she made the decision to start her own fashion label. Her brand is a success and now she expanded her company designing not only clothes, shoes, and accessories but now jewelleries, and even homeware and kitchenware.
6. Sara Blakey
Company: Spanx
Sara Blakely faced rejection everywhere while trying to launch her idea. She never gave up and later on Oprah supported and acknowledged her idea, launching her business idea and making it popular, and nevertheless very successful.
7. Rihanna
Company: Fenty Beauty, Fenty Skin and Savage x Fenty
Rihanna may have started her career as a singer on stage, but she quickly made a name as a household name in the beauty industry with the release of her 40-shade inclusivity line of foundations.
8. Oprah Winfrey
Company: Harpo Productions
Oprah’s story of “starting from the bottom now we’re here” is well-known. Oprah built not only a name for herself but became one of the most influential women in the world. She started as a news anchor, then moved onto her own talk show and ended up investing into philanthropy. She is also the founder of Harpo Productions, the Oprah Winfrey Network, and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.
9. Jasmine Crowe
Company: Goodr
Jasmine Crowe founded Goodr in 2017 as a sustainable platform that manages food waste and fights against hunger. Before Goodr, Jasmine used to make meals for the homeless in the kitchen from her own apartment, called Sunday Soul. For a couple of years, she was cooking bi-weekly meals that would load up in the car and drive through senior homes, parks, shelters and share with those that needed it. That’s when the ides of Goodr arose.
10. Sofia Vergara
Company: EBY
Sofia Vergara is not only an actress, but she expanded her career when she co-founded, together with Renata Black, an underwear business called EBY in 2019. An important aspect of the business is that the founders take 10% of their profits to offer small loans to invest in women who want to make a living for themselves.
11. Nora Khaldi
Company: Nuritas
Nora Khaldi has founded Nuritas in 2014 with the goal of using computer technology to discover new diseases-beating functional ingredients in food, working to help manage and improve human health.
12. Reshma Saujani
Company: Girls Who Code
Reshma Saujani founded Girls Who Code in 2011 as a way to inspire and give young women enough skills and resources to pursue a computer science education and career. The courses offered by the company include a high-touch mentorship for young women.
