Knowing your target audience is crucial for any brand, but how exactly can a brand identify the best target audience, the one with the highest potential to offer loyal customers?
What is the target audience?
A target audience is the people you want to target with your social media advertising and content. Some people will be more interested in a product or service that your company offers. These people may carry similar characteristics, may be of similar age or even follow a similar lifestyle. Every social media user falls into a specific target audience category and all of us have experienced it. When we talk about a product and this product appears on our social media ads this means that this company is doing a great job in targeting their audience. If you compare the ads which appear on your social media accounts they might be very similar to the ones your friends have, however, if you compare them to the ads on your parent’s social media they would be very different.
Why is it important to identify it?
A social media marketing campaign which is targeting everyone has almost no chance of success and is most often a waste of resources. Knowing your target audience can be extremely beneficial both for sales and for your budget. Having a clear focus on a specific group makes it much easier to plan and prioritize your budget. By understanding your target audience, you will be able to create social media content based on their likes which will create more views, follows sales and even brand loyalty.
And how to identify your target audience?
In order to identify your target audience, it is essential to know what you're selling? And why will people want to buy it? Start by analyzing your current customers. What is their age? Millennials and Gen Z are two different generations who are both heavy social media users however their buying habits differ. Where are your buyers located, how much are they willing to spend on your product, what are their interests? Identifying those points will give you a basic understanding of your target audience.
Find what people think about your brand and who are the people that talk about it. Also look at your competitors and their target audience. By identifying those things, you will understand why people need your product. Use your social media to show you understand their problem and how your product will help them have a better life, and will bring meaning to their existence. There is no such thing as going too much in detail when identifying your target audience.
It is important to use tools when researching the traffic on your website and social media channels, such as Google Analytics or Social Blade. These tools will give you statistics on your current audience and their engagement with your content. When all your research is done, create a target persona that will embody your target audience. Give them a name, age and gender, and include things such as what they do for a living, their hobbies, social life, the time they send on social media, all your brand needs to know about them. Be as detailed as you can.
Social media is a powerful marketing tool if used in the right way. Identifying your target audience is at the core of every successful marketing campaign and all brands need it.
