Social media is constantly moving forward: new platforms, new filters, new trends. Businesses must be online to connect with the audience, increase brand awareness and revenue and to survive, thus it is crucial to understand the importance of social media trends for the growth of your business. Read on to discover what are the social media trends that everyone has been talking about lately.

1. Metrics
Marketers have started to look at new metrics to decide what is working or not on social media. Engagement can be defined in terms of likes/comments, shares, retweets or interaction with consumers. However, with Facebook and Instagram testing the public removal of likes, likes may soon not be a tool for measuring performance anymore. Brands are more interested in what is being said by consumers and care less about how many likes they get. Understanding what makes customers curios about the brand and what motivates them to be part of conversations with the brand is, as marketers suggest, more important than how many people like a post.
2. Target audience
Brands wish to have a high reach, but they are also more focused on creating meaningful and strong connections with specific target audiences that are built on similar interests and characteristics. Brands have started to understand that what works for one consumer does not always work for a thousand and they must address their target groups individually. Why? Because privacy is taken more seriously, and consumers are choosier about their content and interactions. One great example that fits this trend is the option of sharing Instagram Stories only with a chosen group of followers.
3. Stories
We are back at Instagram Stories, which have been a social media trend for the past years. Making Stories interactive by using polls or Q&A’s has proven to be a great way to engage with the audience and really get to know them, what they like and what they don’t. Asking them a question and have them answer can tell you more about them than some metrics can and they also get to know more about the brand.
4. Ads
Yes, you can shop online directly from Instagram now, without having to click on other links. Times are changing and e-commerce is growing because social shopping seems to sound good to consumers. Ads have seen many improvements, making it easier for brands to encourage their customers to shop on social media.
5. Influencers
No, they are not going anywhere, but brands are more selective when it comes to influencer marketing. They are not looking for influencers that have millions of followers. They want authentic people that stay true to themselves, their content and small or big online community. Brands should work only with carefully chosen influencers (that do not care only about the special deals they could get) and really focus on the potential audience that they could target through influencers.
Many brands have already started collaborating with nano-influencers, who are those influencers that have between 1,000 and 5,000 followers. Nano-influencers are valued due to their strong connections with their followers and how much they trust them, for their specific and unique content, and because they are more cost-effective.
Hopefully, these trends can help your business understand what is working or not for the upcoming year, but one thing is for sure: social media is evolving, and brands must keep up. What trends will impact your brand in 2021? Let us know in the comments below.
Cheers!
