Most businesses know that if there is one thing important to watch when creating a social media strategy and content, it’s trends. What’s trending today and how can you jump on the social media bandwagon, so your business gets the most possible exposure? The world of social media is a fast-paced environment, and in this article, we will share some of the trends we see right now to help you keep up!
Ephemeral content
This is content we see trending on many social media platforms right now and for the foreseeable future. But what is ephemeral content exactly? It’s media content that is fast-paced, short, and to the point. Ephemeral content is only accessible temporarily (mostly 24 hours) before it disappears. Great examples of this type of content can be found on Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. On these platforms, users and businesses can add “stories” to their accounts which automatically disappear after a day.
The advantages of this type of content for businesses are that ephemeral content usually has a higher engagement rate, builds trust with followers and has a wider reach. This type of flash content also activates FOMO (fear of missing out) in users, which in turn will draw an immediate response from them. Users will be quicker in signing up for something, downloading or purchasing a product.
So, if your startup doesn’t apply stories into your social media plan it’s definitely something you should consider as it can be very effective if used well!

New social platforms
Over the past year we have seen some social media platforms gain an explosive amount of popularity. Tiktok and Twitch were amongst those extremely popular platforms. Although both of these businesses were launched years earlier, they only now gained popularity. Businesses who saw marketing opportunities early in 2020 on Tiktok have increased their sales, brand exposure and at the same time had a lot of engagement with their followers. This only proves that to be at the right place at the right time is important!
Social platforms to watch in 2021 we predict are the following:
1. MeWe
MeWe is an alternative social platform. It presents itself as the “next-gen social network” and centers around data privacy and providing an ad-free experience.
2. Parler
Parler is a non-biased, free speech social media focused on protecting user's rights.
3. Caffeine
Watch live streams and chat in real-time. From entertainment to gaming to sports events.
Including upcoming social media platforms in your social media strategy is treading on new ground. Most of these new platforms don’t really have a marketing etiquette set up yet. This both has its advantages when you look at use of creativity and disadvantages when you consider you don’t know how effective marketing on this new platform will be.
Social commerce is thriving
Selling on social media has been a rising trend for a while now. What we predict is that social commerce will continue to expand in 2021. Large social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest have already streamlined the social commerce experience on their platforms. However, due to the popularity and effectiveness of the retail features they have implemented we sure can expect an expansion of these features next year.
Expected is that social selling will become a mainstream way of buying products in the future. If you haven’t already implemented social selling in your strategy, we suggest you consider doing it soon. Any social platforms that you know about? Let us know in the comments below.
Cheers!
