There’s an endless number of social media platforms, many that are not active anymore and even more who are being released every day. In an era in which so much information is thrown at you and in which you have so many options to choose from, it may be difficult to know everything that is out there. If you are curious what else is there for you to choose besides Facebook and Instagram, check out this small list that we compiled for you.

1. Yo
Yo was an app launched in 2014 that originally allowed you to send a “yo” to other users. Later on, the app added new features such as location pins and sending photos, but since every other social media platform allows you to do so, there was nothing special about Yo.
2. Gab
Probably the most controversial entry, Gab was called “Twitter for racists” numerous times. The app looks very similar to Twitter and it allows its users to post anything without suspending them for hate speech – aspect that becomes quickly troublesome. Neither Apple nor Google allowed them to be on their AppStore, respectively Play Store, so the users have to use it as a web-based app.
3. Wayn
Wayn is a platform for those who enjoy travelling and lifestyle content. The goal is to discover new places to go to and meet new like-minded people that enjoy the same things as you.
4. Classmates
Classmates is a social media network that was founded in 1995. It originally started as a helper for the users to find old classmates from kindergarten, primary school, middle school, high school, college, and workplaces. As of 2015, Classmates managed to help organize 350,000 class reunions.
5. Viadeo
Viadeo is a professional social network, similar in style and target audience to LinkedIn, in which aims to connect businesses. The members include business owners, entrepreneurs, and managers.
6. Xing
Xing is another professional network aimed towards businesses and professionals, used mainly in countries such as Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. It is working on a similar pattern as Slack, in the sense that you are able to start a closed company group discussion and collaborate,
7. Nextdoor
Nextdoor is a social media platform designed to share information through neighbourhoods. Members can create neighbourhoods with a minimum of 10 members; the users can connect, share, and discuss local issues, local information, and urgent warnings. An interesting fact is that the app has reported an increase usage during natural disasters.
8. Tagged
Tagged is a social media network website that allows its users to browse profiles, share tags and virtual gifts. The users can customize their profile page, to which they can post a biography about themselves and their interests, post status updates, upload photos, and send and receive messages. There are chat rooms where users engage in real time online chat according to their age and mood.
Which one of these platforms do you found most interesting? Do you know any other not so well-known ones? Are you already part of any? Let us know in the comments!
Cheers!
